Monsoon Reaches Delhi Five Days Late, Bringing Widespread Rain and Relief From Humid Weather
The Southwest Monsoon reached Delhi five days later than its normal onset, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and relief from prolonged heat and humidity. The India Meteorological Department confirmed the first July monsoon arrival since 2021 and forecast further advancement across North India, while Delhi's air quality remained in the satisfactory category.
Intermittent showers accompanied by light winds were recorded across several areas of the city during the morning hours. The rainfall lowered temperatures and offered respite to residents who had been experiencing persistent heat and humidity over the past several days.
The IMD stated that the monsoon had previously reached Delhi on July 13 in 2021. In the last five years, the Southwest Monsoon arrived on June 29 in 2025, June 28 in 2024, June 25 in 2023, and June 30 in 2022, making this year's onset one of the latest in recent years.
Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality remained in the 'Satisfactory' category. According to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 100 at 9:00 a.m. The CPCB classifies an AQI between 0 and 50 as 'Good', 51 to 100 as 'Satisfactory', 101 to 200 as 'Moderate', 201 to 300 as 'Poor', 301 to 400 as 'Very Poor', and 401 to 500 as 'Severe'.
The weather office has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall across many parts of Delhi throughout the day, while generally cloudy skies are expected to prevail.
IMD officials said favourable atmospheric conditions are expected to support the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into several parts of North India over the coming days. A yellow alert has also been issued for parts of western and central India due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall.
The weather department further stated that conditions remain favourable for the Southwest Monsoon to advance into additional parts of the North Arabian Sea and Gujarat, the remaining regions of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab, as well as more areas of Rajasthan over the next two to three days.
The arrival of the Southwest Monsoon marks a significant seasonal transition for Delhi and surrounding regions, bringing widespread rainfall, improved weather conditions, and setting the stage for further monsoon advancement across northern parts of the country in the days ahead.
